Well our latest trip was an outing trout fishing at the concrete bowl that is Toft Newton Reservoir near Market Rasen. It had been fishing it's head off for the last few weeks with a rod average of over 6 per rod!! We couldn't fail....
Cliff got there before me (no surprise there) and promptly tapped the locals up for some advice and was sold a bunch of "let's get rid of these files to the next punter" specials :-)
I promptly went and purchased a selection of the same, "these will do the job" flies and set off to bag some trout, after paying the extra quid for the chance of cashing in a 'tagged' fish.
I started fishing at about 2:30, with a team of 2 buzzers from my new flies and a gold head hares ear on the point. I made my usual mistake in my first fly fishing trip of the season and made my leader much too long for my dodgey casting technique to deal with!! So after a few tangles I got sorted out and started to get some flies in the water. Clliff made a comment that I may be in luck as trout were topping within a few feet of the bank :-)
After a few hours of nothing, I took some advice from a helpful chap (not Cliff) and shortened my leader to just 2 flies and used an indicator. My first tug (way hay) came along at 7:00 (4.5 hours in!!) but I didn't connect with it. Nothing else came along and now the trout were topping all over the place, taking flies hatching off the surface. I switched to fishing 2 dry flies, an emerger pattern and a sedge. I had 3 or 4 rises (way hay again) but still couldn't tempt a proper take. I perservered until about 9:30 and had to stop as we were in danger of being locked in. So no fish and not even a real take, bugger!!
The only conclusion I can draw from this is that I got the wrong books from the library:-)!!
Here's to next time!!
Oh Cliff caught 2, well done!! [gritted teeth]
